It is estimated that each year in Uganda, 5,700 women die in pregnancy and childbirth. The current child mortality rate in Uganda is listed at 131 per 1,000 live births, or an effective mortality rate of 13.1%. This makes it the highest under-5 mortality rate in Eastern Africa. Poor pregnancy outcomes are strongly influenced by unanticipated pregnancy problems and delays in receiving proper care. Although Uganda has achieved outstanding strides, most deaths occur in hard-to-reach, marginalized communities lacking essential life-saving technologies such as ultrasound scans.
Through this project, ultrasound services will be more accessible to the community, and difficulties will be identified early on and treated before it’s too late. This will significantly reduce infant and maternal morbidity and mortality.
Through financing from the United States African Development Foundation and the Builders of Africa Network, the Nkuruba Health Center in Fort Portal acquired a cutting-edge ultrasound scan. Using this ultrasound, maternal health will improve. Improvements in antenatal care will lower maternal and child morbidity and mortality and help achieve the third Sustainable Development Goal.
