In Uganda, small-scale farmers have few options for adding value to their harvests. As a result, their ability to compete in the local maize flour and export markets is hampered.
Uganda Development Trust has been working with Namubuka ACE to provide grant management services, business development services, and technical assistance for the last four years. During that time, they constructed a store, purchased a truck, a maize mill, and two maize threshers with funding from the United States African Development Foundation (USADF), which has accelerated threshing, improved grain transport, storage, and quality, and facilitated the processing of maize grain into flour. Because they can now sell value-added maize flour to the community at higher prices, their members’ incomes have increased, and they enjoy a better standard of living.
