Since 2019, the Uganda Development Trust has helped the Bushika Integrated Area Cooperative Enterprise with technical assistance and business development services.
Due to a lack of certification, Ugandan coffee growers only earn low prices for their crops. Bushika was supported by UDET in her pursuit of this fair-trade certification. It was funded by the United States African Development Foundation grant.
Farmers can now sell their Arabica coffee on the fair-trade specialty market, where prices can reach USD 20 per kilogram, as opposed to the USD 3.5 per kilogram that they have previously received. Smallholder farmers are enjoying a better standard of living as a result of the added income.
