Small-holder farmers in Uganda use poor post-harvest handling practices. They used sticks to thresh maize, producing low-quality broken maize that fetches low prices. Farmers in the Namubuka Area Cooperative Enterprises were not immune to such practices, and their capacity to compete in the maize export market in Kenya was hurt as a result.
With support from United States African Development Foundation (USADF), they bought two maize threshers, which have sped up threshing and enhanced grain quality. They can now sell maize to Kenyans who offer better prices, and the incomes and living standards of their members have improved as a result.
