Kayonza Growers Tea Facility Limited (KGTF) had around 6,460 farmers who grow and supply green tea leaves to the factory in Kanungu District, Western Uganda. KGTF lacked the equipment to package its tea into tea sachets and tea bags for sale as premium branded tea. It was also difficult to pay the 6,460 farmers in cash every month.
Between 2017 and 2022, Uganda Development Trust provided business development services and technical support to KGTF after receiving a USD 250,000 grant from USADF to build a tea packing house, purchase two tea packaging machines, purchase a 5-ton lorry, increase tea marketing, acquire accounting software, and train workers on how to use it.
Sales climbed by 571 percent (from UGX 14.1 billion to UGX 80.6 billion) while net income increased by 845 percent (from UGX 2.4 billion to UGX 20.3 billion). Raw green tea purchases climbed from UGX 3 billion to UGX 41 billion. The amount of green tea purchased and processed went from 2,251 tons to 49,879 tons, the number of farmers climbed from 6,614 to 7,804, including 2,761 women, and 740 full-time jobs were created.
